Creative solutions: Art therapy

Our first We Draw art therapy class was a resounding success. After 6 weeks of emotional expression and creativity, each participant has finished with a unique piece of art on canvas that speaks their story of personal growth and healing. They were proud to share a little of their journey with a small group of staff and friends last week.

Based on the idea that creativity and the ability to heal ourselves come from the same place, Art Therapy and Interactive Drawing Therapy are especially beneficial in the recovery from sexual trauma, because they empower the individual.

Art Therapy is a form of psychotherapy where the therapist assists an individual to express themselves through visual art, music, poetry, and drama. It allows the individual to examine their subconscious, thoughts, and emotions, giving them the opportunity to express themselves safely. Many people use Art Therapy to explore and understand unhealthily behaviour which supports them to make positive change and learn new coping skills.

Interactive Drawing Therapy is a client centered practice that draws on the subconscious mind to facilitate their own ability to heal. It is particularly helpful for those who find it difficult to express what is going on. A person can safely work with overwhelming feelings, to create positive change in their life, empowering the individual or group to find the words and images that reveal the nature of the underlying issues.

The Road Forward now provides individual and group sessions in Art therapy – for those of you who are interested please register through our website Get In Touch — The Road Forward
